The song was penned by Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830-1894). Ms. Rossetti comes from a family steeped in the arts, she found solace in writing as a result of poor health from the age of 16. She most known for her two most famous hymns, Love Came Down at Christmas composed in 1885 and In the Bleak Midwinter, the latter first published as the poem A Christmas Carol in 1972.
It first appeared as a hymn in The English Hymnal (1906) where it was paired to the tune by the famous English composer Gustav Holst (1874-1934). Rossetti begins her poetic retelling of the Nativity story by describing attributes of the winter season, which is when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
In this scene, there are traditional elements of the traditional Nativity story found in gospels of the New Testament, including the stable where Jesus was born, his mother, the Virgin Mary, and the angels and animals who worshiped the baby. Rossetti concludes by imagining herself in the position of a Shepherd and Wise Man, and declares that her heart is the one gift she can offer Jesus.
